What do people like about the Mitsubishi i-MiEV?

The summer of 2011 the Mitsubishi i-MiEV began appearing in auto shows and making its first impressions on the driving public. The media attention on the vehicle was more than above average because the details about the EV (electric vehicle) had intrigued so many different groups and individuals.

After all, the makers of the Mitsubishi i-MiEV claimed that it could go 62 miles on a single battery cycle and that it cost only one-third of the average gas powered vehicles to operate, but that this reduction could be increased by almost three-fold if the owner learned when their utility companies extended discounted pricing to EV owners.

As is the case with almost anything in life, the proof for this vehicle would have to be in the proverbial pudding. This became available when the first of the test models became available to the media and reviewing public in summer of 2011. The initial responses were very interesting with the Mitsubishi i-MiEV being called everything from fun to a “runaround”.

What people liked about the Mitsubishi i-MiEV right away was the high level of communication about the status of the “charge”. For instance, reviewers seemed to all notice that the “range meter” changed with every new pattern or behavior – turn on the air conditioning and the range declines, place more demand on the battery pack and the range declines, turn on the heated seats and watch the range go even lower.

The manufacturers are particularly fond of their monitoring and gauge system and have designed a panel that makes it quite easy to understand how many minutes or hours of usage remain in the battery based on current behaviors or usage patterns. This is going to become a vital component in almost any EV because there is not yet an adequate infrastructure to support lengthy trips in the cars. Fortunately, this model can plug into any standard wall outlet, which makes it quite convenient for most modern drivers looking to save money and the environment.

A lot of people were anticipating that the vehicle would be drawn closely to other mini cars such as the smart fortwo that is one of the leading EVs on the roads. Instead, the comparisons indicated that the i-MiEV did have the same general looks of the other popular model but that it was also a bit more on the normal side in terms of the way it handled and felt on the road.
