Nissan Leaf and Household Power

Nissan Leaf and Household Power

One of the biggest news stories to come from the world of EVs (electric vehicles) during 2011 was the announcement by Nissan that their Nissan Leaf could actually provide emergency energy supplies to a home during the event of a power outage or failure. They went on to explain that the Nissan Leaf (due to reach consumer markets in 2012) has the option for two-way energy flow. This means that the vehicle can accept energy into its batteries, but that a simple switch can re-direct that energy back into the charging station, and then back to the source. In that case, say the carmakers, the Nissan Leaf can operate a home should the power supplies be interrupted or fail.

They went on to indicate that the car could keep the average American home functioning for roughly 20 hours after the power loss. So, is it possible? That is something that will not be determined until the vehicles appear in the spring season of 2012. What people do know about the Nissan Leaf is that the car has a power control system rated at 6,000 watts with lithium-ion batteries capable of storing up to 24,000 kilowatts for up to two days at a time.

What one has to consider is if this is a distraction from the vehicle itself. After all, how does it compare to the other EVs on the market? It is a zero emissions car with no gas required. It’s makers say that it can provide one hundred miles per full charge, obtain speeds of 90 mph, and has the regenerative braking system familiar to most EV owners.

How it will compare in road tests and consumer reports remains to be seen. It was featured at an environmentally friendly home show in Japan earlier in 2011 and received a lot of rave reviews about the good looks and anticipated performance. Many people were interested in the electrically supply functions, but that has more to do with the fact that Japan has experienced a reduction of electrical energy supplies (by roughly 20% since the last year due to natural disasters), and has always been a location in which blackouts were a serious concern. This means that many of the technical features or specifications of the vehicle were not assessed fully. A look at the formal listing of these items makes it clear that the car is packed with options and is looking like a great investment.
