Massachusetts Moving Ahead with Electric Car Charging Stations

Electric vehicles are certainly gaining a lot of attention in recent years, but with little access to charging stations outside of home, few consumers have really made the transition.  Car manufacturers and environmentalists alike are trying to lobby governments to help make the vehicles a more viable alternative to traditional fuel based vehicles, but progress on the matter has been slow.  It is worth noting, however, that many states are certainly starting to make progress.  The Mall of America has now installed a charging station, as have many businesses in California.  And now it seems that Massachusetts is making a very active effort to increase opportunities for people who purchase these vehicles.

The commissioner of Massachusetts’ Department of Energy Resources has made it clear that he believes electric cars are a critical part of reducing emissions on the state and that he recognizes the reluctance of consumers to purchase the vehicles when there are few to no convenient places to recharge them.  In recognizing this, he has worked to garner funding to build a statewide infrastructure of charging stations that includes a grand total of 142 electric vehicle recharging facilities statewide.

Massachusetts has received close to $500,000 in federal grants to complete the project, as well as $348,000 worth of funding from an Ohio power plant.  This funding will cover virtually all of the expenses of installing the stations, which cost between $5,000 and $6,000 apiece.  While 48 of the stations will be in state owned locations such as commuter rail parking lots, the remaining 94 stations will be installed in the 25 cities and towns that specifically requested them.  These stations will certainly go a long way towards helping convince Massachusetts residents that the purchase of electric vehicles does not have to be inconvenient.

Massachusetts is certainly onto a good idea, but what is perhaps the most intelligent thing behind it is this: all 142 of these stations are expected to be completed by October 2011.  Electric vehicles are expected to go on sale in the area around this same time.  Consumers in other states have been bombarded with pressure to purchase these vehicles long before viable recharging options are available, leading many to dismiss the notion entirely.  With Massachusetts residents being offered the cars in a time when there are plenty of statewide recharging options, the chances are good that the initial public reception will be much more embracing of the technolo
