The Chevy Volt Has Inspired GM to Give It a Sibling

The Chevy Volt Has Inspired GM (NYSE: GM) to Give It a Sibling

The Chevy Volt is one of the latest in the extended range electric car offerings on the market.  Created by General Motors and met with surprising demand and success, the Chevy Volt has helped to bring EVs into the public spotlight.  Along with other entrants in the EV race, such as the Nissan Leaf and the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, the Chevy Volt allows daily commuters to make most or all of their travel on battery use alone without the need to also consume gas.

Considering that the average charge uses only about $1.50 worth of electricity and generates far fewer emissions, the car certainly has a fan base, especially in the green movement.  On August 12, 2011, General Motors made a surprising announcement by telling the press that they have given the green light to another EV- this one to be produced by Cadillac.

Cadillac’s version of the Chevy Volt is likely going to be based on another concept car created by GM and unveiled at 2009’s North American International Auto Show.  The car generated quite a buzz at the show, but shortly afterwards it seemed to fall completely off the radar.  Much like the Chevy Volt, the new Cadillac EV will run on battery power and will contain a gas engine that kicks on to generate battery power when it starts to become exhausted.  There is no word yet on range or other specs for the car, but given Cadillac’s reputation and the fact that the car has been on the shelf for a few years now, consumers will likely be able to expect some upgrades over the Chevy Volt.

Overall, the move really makes sense.  Average consumers are hesitant to purchase EVs, largely due to a significantly higher price tag than their fossil fuel consuming counterparts.  Cadillac owners are typically considerably more affluent, and are thus more likely to consider spending the added cost of an EV.  As the new Cadillacs take to the road and average consumers start to see EVs traveling longer distances without running out of power and stopping dead as many fear, the hope is that sales of vehicles such as the Chevy Volt will experience even greater growth.  Federal incentives cut a great deal of the cost of EVs, but until much of America gets over its bout with range anxiety and until more charging stations are completed, it may take the introduction of cars like the Cadillac EV and people willing to spend on them to help spur EV sales.

The subsequent time I learn a blog, I hope that it doesnt disappoint me as much as this one. I imply, I know it was my choice to learn, but I truly thought youd have something attention-grabbing to say. All I hear is a bunch of whining about one thing that you possibly can repair in case you werent too busy looking for attention.
