As First Release Approaches, Consumers Await the Nissan Leaf

As winter of 2011 rapidly approaches, consumers, environmentalists, and car manufacturers alike will be waiting with bated breath as the newest models of electric vehicles finally hit the road.  Most of these vehicles, however, are actually at least partially powered by gas.  The 2011 Nissan Leaf, on the other hand, is one of the few cars hitting the market that will be all-electric and therefore completely zero emissions.  The first production of 20,000 vehicles has long been sold out, so people looking to purchase the Leaf will have to wait until the next run.  Many consumers have already seen delivery of their first run vehicles, however, and so far, the response has been quite positive.

The Nissan Leaf is certainly something unique in today’s car market.  The average operating cost is surprisingly low, and the vehicle only costs about $2.75 or so to charge based on average electricity prices.  The vehicle can travel up to 100 miles on a single charge, which puts it at around 1/3 the running cost of your average hybrid vehicle.  The car can be charged using traditional 220V home outlets, but it is also possible (and recommended) for owners to purchase quick charging stations.

The starting price on the Nissan Leaf is around $32,780, but in an effort to urge consumers to purchase electric vehicles, the federal government is offering a $7,500 tax credit to those who purchase the vehicle.  These credits will be in place until 200,000 of the vehicles have been made, after which they will be phased out over the course of 6 calendar quarters.  After the credits have been applied, the Nissan Leaf comes in at $25, 280, which is comparable to many cars with far greater running costs.  For people in Tennessee who qualify for the EV Program, an additional $2,500 credit is available with Leaf purchase.

The biggest drawback for most consumers in terms of EVs is range anxiety, or the worry that the car will be somewhere it cannot be charged when power runs out.  If the Nissan Leaf is charged each night, it should certainly be sufficient for average daily driving, but still needs a bit of work before it is suitable for cross country driving.  Recharging stations are cropping up all over the US with surprising frequency, however, which means that before long, a cross country trip in an EV might not be any more inconvenient than in a traditional gas powered vehicle.
