14,000 EV Charging Station promised before the end of 2011

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

The Electric Vehicle Project is a $230 million program half funded by the U.S. Federal Stimulus Package and under the direction of ECOTALITY (NASDAQ: ECTY), has snared another retail partner as it looks to expand the roughly 1,200 charging stations currently in place to the 14,000 units promised before the end of 2011.

IKEA announced it will join the likes of Macy’s (NYSE: M), BP (NYSE: BP), Best Buy (NYSE: BBY) and Sears (NASDAQ: SHLD) in hosting EV charging stations at select locations as part of the infrastructure program rolling out in specified regions of the United States.

At least 10 stores in Arizona, California, Oregon and Washington are being considered to host the EV chargers. Participating stores must agree to maintain the installations and report data use and those selected will get charging stations equipped to power at least two vehicles. EV Revolution Has Begun - Walgreen Pledges to Host 800 E.V. Chargers by End of 2011

Sunday, July 24th, 2011

Walgreen (NYSE: WAG) describes itself as the nation’s largest drugstore chain, and the company has another superlative to promote. On Thursday, it vowed to become the country’s biggest host for public electric vehicle charging stations by the end of the year. In total, stores will have about 800 EV charging points.

“Our stores are located along major commuting corridors, so we saw this as a great way to serve the environment,” said Menno Enters, director of energy and sustainability at Walgreen, in a telephone interview. “We got a great customer response from the first stations we hosted, so for us this is a great fit. A national rollout seemed like the right thing to do.”

Walgreen said that its providers already had installed or were in the process of installing chargers at 60 stores in Houston, the Dallas-Fort Worth area and Chicago.

The retailer has signed on partners including 350Green, a charging-infrastructure provider, to perform the installations. The introduction will begin with the New York metropolitan area, particularly the outer boroughs, according to Tim Mason, the president and co-founder of 350Green. The company will account for 425 of the nationwide total. Continue reading “EV Revolution Has Begun - Walgreen Pledges to Host 800 E.V. Chargers by End of 2011” »

Massachusetts new EV charging station, 142 new stations

Saturday, July 23rd, 2011

Masha Traber would prefer to use her electric scooter to tool around the Lexington area for work during the summer, but because of its short range and lack of charging stations, she often has to resort to using her car for longer trips.

So she was the ideal audience for an event state officials held yesterday on Lexington’s Battle Green to debut the new electric vehicle charging stations to be installed around the state, including three in her town.

“I’m totally excited about the new stations because they will expand my ability to ride to Cambridge,’’ Traber said.

Massachusetts officials hope the new charging outlets, 142 stations in 25 communities statewide, will not only make driving more convenient for existing electric-vehicle owners, but will compel other consumers to help the environment by buying them, too.

Most of the stations will be in common commuter or traveler spots - downtown parking areas or garages, MBTA lots, schools, businesses, or shopping malls - and will be owned and operated by municipalities on public land, and by property owners on private land, who will set rates for recharging.

The charging stations are chest-high boxes that can be placed in front of a parking space. The new Chevrolet Volt takes four to five hours to fully charge at these stations and has a 40-mile range.

Many of the stations will be part of ChargePoint Network, run by California-based station maker Coulomb Technologies Inc. and partially funded by the Department of Energy. Continue reading “Massachusetts new EV charging station, 142 new stations” »

Michigans A123 lithium-ion battery coating plant visit from U.S. Energy Secretary Chu

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu visited Michigan on Monday to support the state’s development of electric car batteries and the growth of clean-energy jobs. A123 Systems, which makes lithium-ion batteries for the transportation, electric grid and commercial markets, received a $249 million grant to open its Livonia and Romulus electric vehicle battery plants.

After touring A123 Systems’ new lithium-ion battery coating plant in Romulus, Chu spoke of the growing demand for fuel-efficient vehicles and said the United States needs to create — not import — the necessary technologies. He said the Obama administration is supporting the development of electric vehicle batteries and components through the Recovery Act, which has provided about $2 billion in grants to advanced battery manufacturing.

“A123′s success is a great example of how we are working with industries to create jobs, strengthen our manufacturing industry and help our auto companies to keep in the global market,” Chu said.

The plants are capable of producing batteries for about 20,000 to 30,000 vehicles a year. The company hopes to create about 15 percent of the world’s lithium-ion batteries used for transportation by 2015, said Jason Forcier, vice president of its Automotive Solutions Group. Hyundai Enters the Hybrid Race

Sunday, July 17th, 2011

Just in time for the latest round of high gasoline prices (although they are dropping somewhat at the moment),

the gasoline-electric hybrid version of the redesigned Hyundai Sonata sedan has arrived.

The car is EPA rated at 35 mpg city/40 highway, which isn’t quite as high as the fuel economy of the best-selling hybrid, the Toyota Prius, officially 51 city/48 highway.

But also unlike the Prius, the Sonata hybrid has an almost identical gasoline-only version, which arrived last spring as an early 2011 model. This is a regular-looking car, not a vehicle that screams “hybrid” as it rolls down the road.

Prices of the Sonata and Prius hybrids are similar when configured the same. There is just one trim level for the Sonata, and the base price is $25,795 (plus $750 freight). Options can run the price into the low $30,000s, but those extras aren’t necessary to have a really nice hybrid sedan with ample room for five passengers and their luggage. Toyota (TM) Plug-in’s and ALL Electric RAV4 showcased

Saturday, July 16th, 2011

Toyota’s eco-friendly autos are center stage at a Little Tokyo event this weekend showcasing new technologies and designs from Japan.

Visitors to the Little Tokyo Design Week area can peek inside the Prius Plug-in hybrid, the RAV4 EV battery-electric vehicle and the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Hybrid vehicle that are sitting in the plaza beside the Japanese American National Museum.

The Prius Plug-in will be able to run for 13 miles on power from its Lithium-ion battery, according to Toyota. More than 160 of the vehicles are already being driven in the U.S. as a demonstration program before sales start in earnest next year.

Toyota is working with Tesla on the electric RAV4, which is also expected to become available to buyers in 2012. Meanwhile, the automaker plans to spread more than 100 of its advanced fuel-cell vehicles around the country by 2013 through another demonstration program, with hopes of bringing the technology to market by 2015.

The rest of the event, which lasts through Sunday, involves more than 15 steel storage containers acting as temporary exhibit space.

The Giant Robot retail chain has a makeshift gallery featuring products such as a “crunching dog” USB stick with a model canine doing sit-ups on the end. There’s a “Robot Box,” with various automatons and other machines. Representatives from USC, UCLA and SCI-Arc have their own boxes too.

Near the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, there’s an extended garden set up on stilts with tomatoes, carrots and beans.

Chesapeake Forms $1 Billion Fund to Boost Natural-Gas Demand

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

Chesapeake Energy Corp. (CHK), the most- active U.S. natural-gas driller, will form a $1 billion fund to invest in companies that develop infrastructure or technology to increase the use of gas as a motor fuel.

For the fund’s initial investments, Chesapeake will spend $155 million to buy half of closely held Sundrop Fuels Inc., which plans to build a plant to convert gas and waste products into motor fuel, the Oklahoma City-based company said in a statement today. The plant is expected to open in 2013 with a capacity of 40 million gallons of fuel a year.

It will also spend $150 million over three years on bonds issued by Clean Energy Fuels Corp. (CLNE), a company that builds fueling stations for heavy trucks that run on gas instead of diesel fuel. Chesapeake will make the current and future investments via Chesapeake NG Ventures over the next 10 years, it said.

“What we’re trying to do is create a demand revolution that will have even more benefits than the supply revolution that our company helped create in the last five years,” Chesapeake Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Aubrey McClendon said in an interview.

Chesapeake and other gas producers are hoping that converting cars and trucks to using gas can help boost prices that have declined by 68 percent in the past three years as production climbed. Prices have dropped to an average of $4.288 per million British thermal units this year, after reaching $13.577 in 2008.

Gas Infrastructure Play

“It’s really the largest natural-gas vehicle infrastructure play to date,” Clean Energy Fuels Chief Executive Officer Andrew Littlefair said of Chesapeake’s plan in an interview.

About 1,600 of the more than 3 million heavy trucks in the U.S. — defined as those with a gross vehicle weight of more than 33,000 pounds (15,000 kilograms) — run on liquefied natural gas, or LNG, Littlefair said. Manufacturers are beginning to roll out new engines for the long-haul tractor trailer rigs that run on LNG, he said.

LNG sells for $1.50 to $2 less a gallon than the equivalent amount of diesel and produces less carbon dioxide and other pollutants when burned, Chesapeake said in a statement.

Clean Energy Fuels will use the investment to add about 100 new fueling stations on major highways, Littlefair said. The company, co-founded by Littlefair and Dallas billionaire T. Boone Pickens and based in Seal Beach, California, has about 240 fueling stations already.

Demonstration Plant

Chesapeake chose to invest in Louisville, Colorado-based Sundrop because its technology may be able to produce a liquid from natural gas that costs about the same as LNG, McClendon said. Sundrop is backed by Oak Investment Partners and Kleiner Perkins Caulfied & Byers, according to its website.

“We certainly think the demonstration plant is going to prove the efficacy of the technology and the compelling nature of the economics underneath it,” McClendon said.

Chesapeake has begun converting its fleet of 4,500 light trucks to run on compressed natural gas. The company will convert 100 of its drilling rigs and some of its fleet of hydraulic fracturing equipment to run on LNG, it said today.

Converting the rigs and fracturing equipment will cut the company’s diesel fuel consumption by about 350,000 gallons a day, according to the statement.

Chesapeake is operating 157 drilling rigs in the U.S. this week, the most among oil and gas producers, according to data from Baker Hughes Inc.

Tesla Motors (TSLA) Raises addtional $232 Million with a secondary stock offering and private placement.

Monday, July 11th, 2011

Edouard Prous, CTO of EVCARCO Inc. (OTC: EVCA)

Tesla made its name building high-powered, high-priced electric sports cars for the glitterati. The company’s iconic, $109,000 Roadster, introduced in 2008, was never meant for the mass market. Its production run will end at a mere 2,500 cars.

Now, Tesla is leaving its days as a boutique automaker behind. The Palo Alto company, founded in 2003, will make the jump to full-scale production with its next car, the Model S, to be built at the old New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. factory in Fremont. Next year, the company plans to assemble 5,000 of the electric sedans at the plant. In 2013, that number should reach 20,000. The Model S will cost $57,400 to $77,400, depending on the capacity of its battery pack.

Happy 155th Birthday Nikola Tesla

Sunday, July 10th, 2011

On July 10, 1856, Nikola Tesla was born in what is now modern day Croatia. He would go on to study electrical engineering and lay the groundwork for much of theNikola Tesla technology that we take for granted in modern society. Alternating current, electric motors, radio, radar, and wireless energy transmission are just a few of the high water marks in his career. He was also best buddies with Mark Twain. Celebrated in his time, Tesla fell into relative obscurity after some failed grandiose projects and patent battles. He died in 1943 with little money to his name in a New York hotel room.

After falling out of popular history for a time, his prestige has increased in modern times. Tesla’s status as a wronged genius, with a dash of mad scientist thrown in, has grown his legacy substantially. His likeness has appeared in film, comics, and his name was adopted by the makers of the all electric roadster (Tesla Motors; TSLA).

Future of electric cars hinges on better batteries

electric car lithium-ion battery pack

Electric cars are a game-changing technology with an Achilles’ heel — the battery.

Current batteries are expensive and have limited range, making it hard to drive from San Jose to San Francisco and back without stopping to recharge. Experts agree consumers will never fully embrace electric vehicles until they can travel as far as a gas-powered car on a single charge.

So the global race is on to build a better lithium-ion battery, one that pulls off the herculean feat of extending range while being long-lasting, affordable, quick-charging and safe.

In Asia, governments and big battery companies are investing heavily in next-generation battery technology, while in the United States much of the cutting-edge research is being performed at Department of Energy labs and universities. The Bay Area — home to Palo Alto-based Tesla Motors (TSLA), Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and two dozen battery startups — has emerged as one of the nation’s leading hubs of battery innovation.

Generation Y Auto buyers tracked brands and models bought in 2009 and 2010

Saturday, July 9th, 2011

A new study of Gen Y drivers’ preferences looks like more bad news for the Detroit automakers.

Auto pricing site TrueCar.com tracked both the brands and individual models bought in 2009 and 2010 by Generation Y shoppers (ages 18 to 27). The results should strike fear into the hearts of U.S. auto executives: Not a single brand from a domestic automaker made the Top 10 list.

Scion, a brand set up by Toyota Motor specifically aimed at young buyers, was No. 1. (See its Scion tC above right.) Mitsubishi, a name that barely registers with older shoppers, came in second. Some other brands among the top 10, such as Honda and Volkswagen, have a long record of youth appeal. But even the Korean corporate twins Hyundai and Kia, which have recorded surging sales in recent years, appear to have extended their appeal to young buyers as well as older ones.

Though Ford, Chrysler and the General Motors brands have enjoyed big sales gains this year, the TrueCar list portends some…………..

Japense News Reports: Mitsubishi unveils low-cost version of i-MiEV Electric Car

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

The company announced on July 6 that the new i-MiEV will have a sticker price of 2.6 million yen, but the final cost for consumers after government purchasing subsidies will be 1.88 million yen, well below the 2 million yen mark. The price cut was made possible by reducing the number of batteries onboard, which will reduce the car’s range but also make it more accessible, and the company hopes the move will lead to wider-scale adoption of the electric car.

Statement of Support for Efforts to Advance Plug-In Electric Vehicles in the US

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

EVWorld.com Reports; 180+ Organizations Sign Electric Vehicle Support Statement

July 7, 2011 — We, the undersigned businesses, municipalities, and public interest groups from across the nation, support a strong national electric vehicle advancement program that will increase American jobs, decrease pollution, and reduce our dependence on oil.

Oil Independence

Gasoline prices are unstable and rising. Electric vehicles enable drivers to fill up on stable, domestic electricity at a cost equivalent to approximately 75 cents per gallon. Our nation sends up to a third of a trillion dollars overseas each year to purchase foreign oil, often produced by countries that are unstable or unfriendly to American interests. Foreign oil purchases are also responsible for about 50% of the US trade deficit. As Americans struggle to cope with rising and volatile gasoline prices, vehicle innovation provides real options. Greater independence from oil means an economically stronger and more secure America.
